You HATE Your Job… Now What?

It is important to find a career that fulfills your true calling.  When choosing a career, you must take inventory of what you’re genuinely passionate about and find a profession that satisfies that desire.  It gives a sense of satisfaction and fulfillment when you are doing a job that you love.

However, there are those of you that fall into the wrong field, and you’re not gratified.  There are many reasons you can get “stuck” in a position that you don’t like; financial obligations, family responsibilities, or limited opportunities in the field of your choice. It becomes more of a job and not a career.  So what do you do when you’re stuck in the wrong job?

Evaluate your current job
Even though you are not satisfied with your current job overall, find something about it that you do like.  When taking an inventory of your job duties, focus more on those things that excite you.  This will give you a sense of purpose.  It also helps to look at the meaning of your work.  If you are a teacher, look at the difference you make in students’ lives and not on their behavior.

Look at every job as an opportunity
Even though your current position may not be a good fit for you, the organization may be fantastic.  Consider alternative roles within the organization.  Find different ways to get involved in various aspects of the organization.  Whether it’s joining a committee or implementing a process that you are excited about, the organization can benefit from.  This will boost your confidence and give you something to look forward to.

Professional development
Most organizations offer professional development opportunities to their employees.  Look for ways to develop new skills in your current job that will encourage change.  Take this time to take extra training offered by the organization.  You can join a professional association or take a college course if your company offers a tuition reimbursement plan.  This will help you gain knowledge in the area that most excites you so that you can find a career path that you love.

Volunteer opportunities
Always look for opportunities to grow.  Volunteering is a great way to do that.  All non-profit organizations are looking for volunteers in different areas.  This is a great way to gain experience in a profession that you are passionate about.  If you are interested in marketing, volunteer to do free publicity or a newsletter for your local church, a professional association, or a great cause.  This will give you great exposure and a great reference.

Set Goals and Stay Focused
Once you have developed those areas in your current position, it is vital to set goals.  Once you have selected your career goals, stay focused and be persistent in what it is you are passionate about.   Continue to cater to your strengths while finding balance with what is practical.  Do not let the negativity of your job get the best of you.  Focus on the positive, your ultimate career goals, and you will always like your job.
